1913: Laura Lyons is married to the Superintendent of the New York Public Library, and has a good life. When books go missing at the library, she has to figure out her priorities or risk losing everything. 1993: Sadie is Laura Lyons' grandaughter and she gets a job as curator in the same library where her grandmother lived. But manuscripts and parts of an exhibit that Sadie is in charge of go missing, and the investigation of the thefts gets personal.
